Last week, I recommended the popular Frankenstein interactive eBook for iPhone and iPad. This week, I'm very pleased say that the technology behind that choose-your-own-adventure style novel is, in fact, free to use! inklewriter is a powerful web-based editing tool that allows writers to create branching stories in an easy to use platform. Check out this sample story, which is a retelling of Conan Doyle's short story "The Adventure of the Musgrave Ritual."
Stories can be shared quickly via the web. After playing with inklewriter for a while, I am very impressed by its capabilities, and I see lots of possible applications for classrooms! Students can dive deep into historical events, literary titles, ethical dilemmas, and scientific discoveries--all by recreating them in interactive form. Definitely more fun to grade than a typical lab write up....
Enjoy!
Note! As of August 2018, Inklewriter will be shut down. Consider using hyperlinks in Google Slides, or various pages in a Google Site, to substitute for the "choose-your-own-adventure" mechanisms. If you're working on a Mac, iBooks Author will also work. In his excellent blog, Richard Byrne reviewed two additional online tools for doing the same: https://www.freetech4teachers.com/2015/01/three-platforms-for-writing-choose-your.html
