Looking for a fun way to learn a new language? Duolingo is a fabulous, free, web-based option. It takes you through the basics of your language of choice, and its platform is an excellent example of effective gamification in education. You earn points by completing exercises and use them to purchase perks in Duolingo. You can even compete with friends for a spot on the leaderboard--right now, Julia is kicking by butt in Spanish! (If you're interested in getting in on the action, my username is yoda.kim)
Apple named the Duolingo app the best of 2013.
