e-Waste solutions

It's time for a tech tip...why? Because it's Tuesday!

With spring cleaning in full swing, I've created quite the pile of e-waste at home. As this article from the NY Times explains, most electronic waste cannot be disposed of with regular trash, so we either need to refurbish or recycle it. Any e-waste that you generate on campus can be brought to the Tech Office, where they do recycling each quarter.

Off campus, there are a bunch of options for doing so. Many Best Buy and Staples stores accept electronic products for proper recycling, and some manufacturers will buy their old products back from you. Amazon.com has a buy back program that I've found very easy to use. For those who live near Marymount, UCLA offers a very inclusive recycling program for e-waste and other items that cannot go to landfills (e-waste, though, is only accepted on Saturdays). See http://www.lacitysan.org/solid_resources/pdfs/safe-ucla-flyer_english.pdf for more info.

Of course, if you're going to get rid of electronic products anyway, it can always be fun to take them apart and get a look inside first. If you're looking for an extra good time, CRASH Space, a local makerspace in Mar Vista, offers a fun environment for such projects once a month. You can take apart your items in the company of electronics experts and hobbyists, trade parts, then recycle all the extra bits on site.
